In a maternity photoshoot with family members, the star of the day will always be the mom-to-be. But it’s also a great opportunity to create more photos of your growing family before adding a new member.
Think of these photos as a time capsule that will look completely different in just a few months.
But first, a little bit about this sweet mama and why she chose a maternity photoshoot with family members!
Amy is the founder and executive director of the Nashville Collaborative Counseling Center. She’s also a licensed social worker and a huge advocate for maternal health care.
Her advocacy runs deep, focusing on health care for mothers, as she’s a mother to a rainbow baby herself. Family is everything to her, so naturally, she wanted to include them in her maternity photos.
Maternity Photos After Loss and Rainbow Babies
Amy openly shared with me that she had experienced loss, and celebrating this pregnancy with their rainbow baby was a huge milestone! She was excited to document this exciting time and capture their family – and I was honored to work with them! They were incredibly kind and gracious, and I can’t wait until they meet their sweet addition!
Maternity sessions are always touching to create for families. But when losses have occurred in the past, it’s an even more delicate and heartfelt moment for me, as their photographer. It’s truly an honor to celebrate rainbow pregnancies as a joyous occasion with families.
Including Siblings in a Maternity Photoshoot
Including your older children in your maternity photos makes them feel involved in the photo process while encouraging them that they’ll soon be a big brother or sister! It’s a great way to help build up their excitement for your new baby!
Each sibling will have their own time to shine during the photoshoot too! While the focus is on mama and the family unit, I also try to capture photos of each sibling. This could look like photos with mom, some with dad, and photos completely alone.
If you’re worried about how your children will behave during your photoshoot, please don’t be. I’m a mom of two, and I’ve seen and dealt with it all! Trust me, I can handle it all. The only thing you need to do is show up, feel pampered, and have a great time creating memories!
Pro Tip: Bring an extra outfit for kiddos just in case they get messy. I also suggest packing some of their favorite snacks and toys for bribery. I’m not above a bit of bribery to get the perfect shot!
Timing for Including Children and Family Members
For maternity photoshoots with family members, I usually suggest having your partner and children arrive separately. This gives you plenty of time to get comfortable in my studio space and finish up with our professional hair and makeup artist.
Once you’re camera-ready, family members arrive, and we begin with family and sibling photos. I also try to get a few photos of the parents by themselves too during this time. Once these are completed, your family can stick around while we complete your session, or they’re free to leave. It’s entirely up to you.
All of these details are planned out during your design consult with me. So there’s no need to worry about that just yet.
Remember Your Why
It’s perfectly normal to feel nervous or on the fence about whether or not to have maternity photos taken. And a maternity photoshoot with family takes a little more planning – but it’s all worth it!
I always encourage families to remember their why for wanting maternity photos – and who the photos are for. I go into further detail in this blog post.
Maternity photos are some of the only pictures that aren’t just for you. They will also be a gift to your family and new baby. They will only get sweeter as the years go by – especially with family members included in the photos!
